Midwest Infectious Disease Specialists offers an array of infectious disease care. An infectious disease is caused by the entrance of organisms such as bacteria, fungi, parasites, or viruses into the body. These diseases can be transmitted from person to person or from organism to organism, and once inside the body they will grow and multiply. These organisms can create symptoms ranging from sore throat and fever, as in the case of strep throat, to more serious problems such as AIDS or meningitis. An infectious disease specialist can help a patient determine whether the symptoms he/she has are due to infection. Most of an infectious disease specialist's work is done behind the scenes. Infectious disease specialists examine germs carefully and then make a diagnosis and coordinate a plan to treat a patient's disease. Infectious disease specialists commonly work with the patient's primary care physician to develop a treatment plan that best suits his/her needs.
