Our Doctors
Carl Akin, MD
Dr. Carl David Akin obtained his medical degree from the University of Kansas Medical Center. He completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiology at St. Luke's Hospital (Kansas City). He is a fellow with the American College of Cardiology and is a member of the Metropolitan Medical Society of Kansas City, the American Medical Association, and the Missouri State Medical Association. Dr. Akin is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and clinical lipidology.
Stephen Bloom, MD
Dr. Bloom received his bachelor's degree from Clark University, graduating magna cum laude with high honors, and his medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and his Fellowship in cardiology at Tufts University School of Medicine's St. Elizabeth's Hospital of Boston. He has Board Certification in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, Nuclear Cardiology, and Cardiovascular Computed Tomography.
In addition to clinical experience in cardiology, Dr. Bloom has expertise in the following cardiovascular imaging techniques: nuclear cardiology, echocardiography, coronary angiography and multi-slice computed tomography. He is the director of non-invasive cardiology at Midwest Cardiology Associates and Director of Cardiac CT at Centerpoint Hospital.
Dr. Stephen Bloom is a Fellow of the ACC, a Gold Heart member of the AHA, a Fellow of ASNC and a founding member and Fellow of the SCCT. He is actively involved with multiple working groups with the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology and the ACC, writes board questions for the Certified Board of Nuclear Cardiology (CBNC) and the Certified Board for Cardiac CT (CBCCT), has publications involving Cardiac CTA, and is the director of clinical research at Midwest Cardiology Associates.
Dr. Bloom is an Associate Professor, Department of Medicine at The University of Missouri-Kansas City. Dr. Bloom is on staff at Overland Park Regional Hospital, Menorah Medical Center and Centerpoint Hospital.
Richard Brown, MD
Rick Brown, MD, FACC of Midwest Heart Associated delivers invasive, non-interventional cardiology Services in the Research Medical Center and Research Belton Hospital communities.
Dr. Brown has 13 years experience providing care for cardiovascular patients in the Kansas City area. His clinical skills include pacemaker and device implantation, nuclear cardiology, transthoracic/transesophageal echocardiography, lsation, advanced lipid management, and preventative cardiology. Dr. Brown received his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency and Cardiovascular Fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Kiranmayi Chilappa, MD
Dr. Kiranmayi Chilappa obtained her medical degree from Osmania Medical College (India). She completed a residency in internal medicine, a fellowship in cardiology, a fellowship in echocardiography, and a fellowship in advanced echocardiography. She has been honored with the University Gold Medal for Best Outgoing Student, Gold Medal for marks in Internal Medicine, the Satya Sai Gold Medal for academic performance, the Bharati Kamalakar Memorial Award, and the Gold Medal for Academic Performance. She is certified in cardiology and nuclear cardiology and is board-certified in internal medicine.
Paul Chu, MD
Dr. Paul Chu obtained his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin (Madison). He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. His is a member of the Missouri State Medical Association, the American College of Cardiology, the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Intervention, the American Society of Echocardiology and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. Dr. Chu is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases, interventional cardiology and nuclear cardiology.
Elizabeth Dang, MD
Dr. Dang received her bachelor's degree and medical degree from University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. She completed her Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Fellowship at Naval Medical Center-San Diego. She served as Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy, as a Flight Surgeon with a Marine helicopter squadron, and later as Director, Echocardiography Laboratory at Naval Medical Center-Portsmouth. She was appointed Assistant Professor of Medicine, Uniformed Services University, and has received several faculty teaching awards, including American College of Physicians Navy Chapter Teacher of the Year Award. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease. She is an Invasive Cardiologist with particular interests in echocardiography, heart failure, and women's cardiovascular health.
Bangalore Deepak, MD
Dr. Bangalore Deepak received his medical degree from Mysore University in Mysore, India. He completed his internal medicine residency at Yale University/Bridgeport Hospital Program, where he also completed cardiology and interventional cardiology fellowships. Dr. Deepak is board-certified in cardiology, interventional cardiology, vascular medicine, echocardiography, nuclear cardiology and internal medicine. He is a member of the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, the American Society of Echocardiography, the Society of Nuclear Cardiology and the American College of Physicians, among other organizations.
Aaron Doonan, MD
General and interventional cardiologist, Aaron L. Doonan, MD, has joined Midwest Heart & Vascular Specialists. A native Kansan, Dr. Doonan received his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, trained in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic and was a chief cardiology fellow at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Doonan is board-certified in Cardiovascular Diseases and Interventional Cardiology. He has sub-interests in CT-coronary angiography, echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, peripheral arterial disease, structural heart disease, cardiac arrest and STEMI systems of care. Dr. Doonan is currently accepting new patients for consultation on disorders of hypertension, dyslipidemia, palpitations/arrhythmias, coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, valvular heart disease and other general cardiovascular conditions.
Terry Gallion, MD
Dr. Terry Gallion is board-certified in thoracic and general surgery as well as surgical critical care. He has been in practice for more than 20 years. Dr. Gallion obtained his medical degree from and completed his residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Hosuton, Tx. Dr. Gallion performs 98% of all open-heart procedures at Centerpoint Medical Center in Indepednece, Mo. Centerpoint Medical Center's Cardiac Surgery Program has been awarded the highest national ranking -- 3 stars -- from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for 2009-2010. The STS comprehensive rating system compares the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals across the country and only 12 percent of hospitals nationwide received this year's STS 3-star rating. In addition, within the Kansas City region, Centerpoint Medical Center is one of only two hospitals to receive HealthGrades' highest rating -- 5 stars -- in heart valve replacement surgery. Centerpoint Medical Center has been ranked by HealthGrades as among the top ten hospitals in Missouri for Cardiac Surgery for three consecutive years (2009 - 2011).
Hamner Hannah, MD
Dr. Hamner Hannah is board-certified in surgery and thoracic surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Chest Physicians. Dr. Hannah has been named a Super Doctor each year since 2007 and received the 2008 Physician Frist Humanitarian Award by Menorah Medical Center. He has served as chief of cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center and medical staff president for Menorah Medical Center. Dr. Hannah completed his surgical residency at the University of Michigan Hospitals and a thoracic and cardiovascular surgery residency at the University of Alabama, Birmingham.
Willie E Lawrence, MD
Dr. Willie Lawrence obtained his medical degree from and completed his residency at Harvard Medical School and completed his fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He has been honored as a Super Doctor in 2007, 2008 and 2009, as Father of the Year of the Kansas City Juvenile Diabetes Association, with the National Power to End Stroke Award from the American Heart Association and with the Heart and Soul Physician Award. For the American Heart Association, he has served for the Midwest Affiliate, on the board of directors, on the National Professional Education Committee, and as an AHA Spokesperson. He is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology and nuclear cardiology.
Bernard Levi, MD
Dr. Levi has received his medical degree from the University of Michigan. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at The University of California in San Diego and his cardiology fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He is Board-Certified in Internal Medicine. He was a Major in the United States Air Force, where he was Chief of Internal Medicine at Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, Nevada. He is Past President of the Medical Staff at Menorah Medical Center and the Medical Center of Independence. Dr. Levi is an Associate Professor, Department of Medicine at The University of Missouri-Kansas City. His expertise is in the field of cardiology, including interventional techniques and electrophysiology.
Paul Nager, DO
Dr. Nager received his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and his medical degree from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences. He completed his Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine as well as his Fellowship in Cardiovascular Diseases at Sinai Hospital in Detroit, MI. He did his Interventional Cardiology Training at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA, where he was involved in the early phases of human stent trials.
Sarat Pachalla, MD
Sarat C. Pachalla, MD, FACC, is board certified in internal medicine with a subspecialty in cardiovascular diseases and added qualifications in interventional cardiology. Dr. Pachalla has been recognized by his Kansas City area colleagues, as a Super Doctor honoree. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and a member of the American Medical Association, the Kansas State Medical Society and the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Intervention.

Peter Park, MD
Dr. Park obtained his degree from the University of California, Irvine College of Medicine. He completed a residency in family medicine at Kaiser Parmenente Woodland Hills, an internal medicine residency at West Los Angeles VA Medical Center/UCLA San Fernando, and a clinical cardiac electrophysiology fellowship at the Oregon Health and Science Center in Portland. He is board-certified in electrophysiology, cardiology, internal medicine and family practice.
Ujjaval Patel, MD
Dr. Patel received his medical degree from the Smt. N.H.L. Municipal Medical College in Ahmedabad, India. He was a resident and chief resident in internal medicine at the State University of New York Health Science Center in Syracuse, New York. He completed a cardiology fellowship at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Connecticut and a one year Interventional Cardiology fellowship at the University of Connecticut, St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut.
Karl Pfuetze, MD
Dr. Pfuetze bachelor's degree is from the Kansas University and his medical degree from the University of Kansas Medical Center. He completed his Internship at the Sacramento County Hospital in California and a one-year Residency in Family Practice. After a tour of duty in Vietnam, he completed an Internal Medicine Residency and a Cardiology Fellowship at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC where he was Chief Medical Resident. He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army serving from 1968-1976 and was awarded three bronze stars in Vietnam. He is a long-time resident of the Kansas City area. For 24 years he practiced with Physicians Associated and the Kenyon Clinic in Overland Park, KS. In 2000, he merged his practice with Midwest Cardiology Associates. He was the Chief of Cardiology at Humana Hospital, Overland Park, KS from 1978-1990. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease, and Nuclear Cardiology. Dr. Pfuetze is a General Invasive Cardiologist with special interests in lipidology, atherosclerosis, echocardiography, and nuclear cardiology.
George Pierson, MD
Dr. George Pierson is an interventional cardiologist. He graduated from the University of Kansas Medical Center and did his cardiology fellowship at Duke University. He has been practicing in Kansas City for over 25 years. He specializes in angioplasty and stent placement involving coronary arteries.
George Pogson, MD
Dr. George Pogson obtained his medical degree from the University of Kansas Medical School. He completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiology at St. Luke's Hospital (Kansas City). He is a member of the American Heart Association, the Metropolitan Medical Society of Kansas City, the Missouri Medical Association, the American Medical Association and the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology and is a fellow with the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Pogson is board-certified in internal medicine and cardiology.
Theodore Pope, MD
Dr. Pope received his bachelor's and master's degrees at Kansas State University in 1993 and 1994 and his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1998. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Wright-Patterson Medical Center in Ohio and his cardiology fellowship at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. He served 12 years in the United States Air Force as an internist and cardiologist, including three deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He left the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2010. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, and Nuclear Cardiology. He is an invasive cardiologist with interests in stress testing, echocardiography, and enjoys both office and hospital-based general cardiology.
C David Rios, MD
C. David Rios, MD, FACC, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained cardiologist with more than 10 years of experience. He has spent much of his career serving the residents of Greater Kansas City and the surrounding areas. Dr. Rios has authored numerous articles and papers in his field and during his career served as a research assistant and teaching assistant at Stanford University. Dr. Rios has been the recipient of multiple awards and honors, including the Robert Wood Johnson Minority Medical Faculty Development Fellowship and the American Heart Association/Iowa Affiliate Postdoctoral Fellowship. He received his medical degree from the Stanford University School of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. He completed his cardiology fellowship at the University of Iowa College of Medicine.
Ahmed Romeya, MD
Ahmed A. Romeya, MD, is a Cardiothoracic surgeon who is board certified in thoracic surgery, general surgery and internal medicine. He has a special interest in minimally invasive cardiac and thoracic surgery and endovascular procedures, including trans-catheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). Prior to joining Midwest Heart & Vascular Specialists, Dr. Romeya practiced in Las Vegas with Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons of Nevada. He completed his training in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. During his career, Dr. Romeya also served as an attending hospitalist with the VA Medical Center in Amarillo, Texas. He received his medical degree from the University of Zagreb Medical School in Croatia and completed residencies in general surgery at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock and Swedish Medical Center in Seattle. He completed his internal medicine residency at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.
Rajendran Sabapathy, MD
Rajendran Sabapathy, MD, FACC, FSCAI, of Midwest Heart & Vascular Specialists, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained interventional cardiologist with nearly 15 years of private practice experience. He is a native of Joplin, Missouri and received his medical degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Dr. Sabapathy completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Missouri-Columbia and served as chief resident. He completed a cardiology fellowship at the University of California-Davis where he also served as chief fellow. His interventional cardiology/peripheral intervention fellowship was completed at St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis.
His areas of interest include coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, peripheral vascular disease and treatment of venous insufficiency. He has to his credit numerous research projects and publications focusing on the identification of coronary artery disease in the emergency room, and in women and the elderly. In addition, he has published numerous case reports detailing complex coronary interventions.
He has been recognized by his peers being elected a fellow in the American College of Cardiology and a fellow in the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Intervention.
He is a board certified in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology.
Prem Samuel, MD
Dr. Prem Samual obtained his medical degree from and completed his residency at Madras Medical College. He completed his fellowship at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
Alan Schneider, MD
Dr. Schneider received his bachelor's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1986 and his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York in 1990. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine as well as his fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the University of Chicago. He is Board-Certified in Cardiovascular Diseases. Dr. Schneider is a general cardiologist with a particular interest in non-invasive cardiology.
Frederic Seligson, MD
Dr. Frederic Seligson obtained his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and his fellowship at Beth Israel Hospital. He is board-certified.
Rachel Sosland, MD
Dr. Sosland received her bachelor's degree from Washington University, St. Louis and her medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. She completed her Internship and Residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center, followed by a Fellowship in Cardiovascular Diseases at the University of Kansas School of Medicine where she served as Chief Fellow of Cardiology. Dr. Sosland is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and ABIM Board Eligible in Cardiovascular Diseases. Her areas of expertise include non-invasive imaging techniques, including echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, and cardiac CTA. She has particular interests in women's cardiovascular health, prevention, lipidology, and atherosclerosis. She has published extensively on cardiovascular topics and has been asked to present her research both in the United States and abroad. Dr. Sosland serves on the advisory board of the Gift of Life Foundation and on the Women's Heart Health Advisory Council.
Lloyd Stahl, MD
Dr. Stahl holds a bachelor's degree from Johns Hopkins University and a medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Baltimore City Hospital. Dr. Stahl was a fellow in cardiology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He has also published several articles on cardiovascular Research topics. Dr. Stahl's areas of expertise include non-invasive imaging techniques, including echocardiography. He is board-certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease.
H William Stites, MD
H. William Stites III, MD, FACC, is a tenured heart specialist with subspecialty certification in both cardiovascular disease and clinical cardiac electrophysiology. Dr. Stites has extensive experience in both private practice and academic settings, and served as a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine.
Dr. Stites is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and of the Council on Clinical Cardiology. Additionally, he is a former co-chair of the Arrhythmia Society of Greater Kansas City and a member of the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology. Dr. Stites is also a member of the American Medical Association and of the American Heart Association.

Richard Thompson, MD
Dr. Richard Thompson is an invasive cardiologist. He graduated from the University of Indiana and completed his cardiology training at William-Beaumont Medical Center. He specializes in nuclear cardiology, cardiac MRI, CTA, and echocardiography.
Carrie Totta, MD
Dr. Carrie Totta attended medical school at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. She completed residencies at both the University of Texas and St. Louis University School of Medicine. Prior to joining Midwest Heart Associates, Dr. Totta served as a cardiologist with the VA Medical Center in Kansas City. She is a former assistant professor of medicine in the cardiovascular division of Saint Louis University School of Medicine, where she was honored as a Cardiovascular Division Teacher of the Year. She is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and has a certificate of proficiency by the American Society of Echocardiography Board. Dr. Totta is a diplomate with the Certification Board of Nuclear Cardiology and a member of the American Medical Association and the American Heart Association.
Chandrasekhar Vasamreddy, MD
Dr. Vasamreddy received his medical degree from S. V. Medical College in Tirupathi, India and was best outgoing student from his class. He completed his Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at Harbor Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He was a research fellow at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He completed Cardiology fellowship and additional year of fellowship in Cardiac Electrophysiology at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, Adult Comprehensive Echocardiography, Nuclear Cardiology and board eligible in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology. He was involved in atrial fibrillation ablation research at Johns Hopkins and published his work in peer reviewed journals. His areas of expertise include invasive catheter ablation of various cardiac rhythm disorders as well as device implantation for various cardiac conditions.
Alec Weisberg, MD
Dr. Alec Weisberg obtained his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville. He completed a residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and fellowships at Vanderbilt and the Texas Heart Institute, Houston. Dr. Weisberg specializes in interventional cardiology, nuclear cardiology and noninvasive vascular imaging. He is board-certified. Dr. Weisberg has been honored as the chief cardiology fellow at the Texas Heart Institute, by the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and the Microbes and Defense Society, and has been awarded the Albert Weinstein Prize in Medicine, the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award and the SEARCH Program Fellowship.

Jill Tibke, RN, MSN, ANP-C
Jill received a bachelor's degree in Biology from Western Washington University in 1997. She then attended the University of Kansas where in 2001, she received her Bachelor of Science in nursing. After completing nursing school Jill worked in the Cardiac Care Unit at St. Joseph Medical Center for 10 years. Jill completed her Master of Science in nursing degree at UMKC's adult nurse practitioner program in December 2008 and has been with Midwest Cardiology since November 2009. She is a certified adult nurse practitioner through AAN.
