Concussion Management Program
We are dedicated to the quality care of athletes who have sustained a mild traumatic brain injury. Each year, over 1.6 million people sustain a concussion. As medical science has evolved and we have learned more about this brain injury, we are able to provide athletes with more sophisticated and comprehensive care.
The concussion management program uses ImPACT™ (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) software. This is the same program used by the National Football League, National Hockey League and other professional sports organizations. Working with athletic programs and individuals, the online program operates by having an individual student athlete take an initial test to establish a baseline of normal brain function. If the individual later receives a concussion, further testing and evaluation are compared to determine when the athlete can safely return to the sport.
- About 10% of all student athletes in contact sports suffer a concussion during their season.
- Recovery may take days or weeks with individuals often experiencing dizziness, headaches, double vision, memory problems, irritability or depression.
- Premature return to play can lead to potentially serious consequences.
- Proper management of the injury is the first step in avoiding long-term complications.
We provide individual and group testing for Baseline (pre-injury) Tests, and individual Post-Injury Testing on an appointment basis.
While annual Baseline Testing is required for Youth Athletes (due to their rapidly developing brains), most High School athletes will ideally Baseline Test twice:
- before their freshman year sports season
- before their junior year sports season
The neuropsychological test we use to evaluate cognitive function is called ImPACT™. Through ImPACT™ we are able to evaluate, document and measure various brain functions, including memory, processing speed, reaction time and symptoms. With proper medical care and neuropsychological testing, ImPACT™ Certified Physicians are able to determine when an athlete has recovered from a concussion and can safely return to athletics.
If an athlete has not taken the baseline test, ImPACT™ Inc. has developed norms that can be used to evaluate the recovery process of a concussed athlete. While these norms can be used to monitor recovery they do not replace the value of an athlete compared to a baseline test.
The neurological computerized ImPACT™ Test requires special training and certification to administer and execute. Our experienced staff has been thoroughly trained and certified by the ImPACT™ organization.
What is a Concussion?
A concussion is a brain injury. Unlike most sports injuries a concussion is not an anatomic injury but an injury of metabolism. In other words, it results in a temporary change of energy usage in the brain. The vast majority of concussions do not result in permanent injury to the brain. However, research suggests that repeat injury, particularly during the recovery period, may result in more severe, in some cases, life-threatening injury.
Who should be tested?
Neurological testing is recommended (age 11 and up) for the following Men’s and Women’s Contact or Collision Sports: Football, Soccer, Lacrosse, Ice Hockey, Basketball, Rugby, Rodeo, Water Polo, Wrestling, Baseball, Softball, Cheerleading, Extreme Sports (Motocross, Skateboarding, In-Line Skating, Skiing)
