
Midwest Women's Healthcare Specialists has provided a comprehensive array of women's health services at the same location for half a century. The physicians merged into the current large partnership years ago and their service area now extends from Jackson County to Clay and Cass Counties along the 71 Hwy corridor. We offer five convenient office locations and new patients are always welcome.
Midwest Women's Healthcare Specialists is part of the Midwest Physicians network in Kansas City. We are affiliated with Research Medical Center as well as the hospitals of HCA Midwest Health System.
Unique services that the fourteen practitioners provide include: obstetrics and gynecology, fertility assistance including in-vitro fertilization (IVF) at the fertility clinic of Dr. Gregory Starks, advanced risk pregnancy care, modern and laparoscopic surgical techniques, birthing center concept and midwifery services for low risk maternity care at Midwest Midwifery, ultrasound services, and urogynecology.

Our Doctors
Rebecca Johnson, MD
Board-certified OB/GYN physician, Rebecca S. Johnson, MD, has delivered care in the Kansas City area for 15 years. In addition to her practice, she also serves as a clinical assistant professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine and as an OB/GYN preceptor for the Nurse Practitioner Program at Research College of Nursing. With specialized training in advanced endoscopic gynecologic procedures, Dr. Johnson provides comprehensive female care for women of all ages. She was listed among America's Top Obstetricians and Gynecologists for 2009. Dr. Johnson is a member of the American Medical Society, the Kansas City Gynecologic Society and the Metropolitan Medical Society of Greater Kansas City. She received her medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine and completed her residency at University of Michigan Affiliated Hospitals in Ann Arbor.
Meredith Levine, MD
Dr. Meredith Levine obtained her medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (St. Maarten) and completed a residency at Research Family Practice. Dr. Levine has been honored by the University of Miami as a Merrick Academic Scholar and is an inductee of Alpha Epsilon Delta premedical honor society. She is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Medical Association, and the Missouri State Medical Association. Dr. Levine volunteers her time at the Rose Brooks Domestic Abuse Shelter, the Kansas City Rescue Mission, and the American Red Cross.
Rick Nagy, MD
Dr. Nagy came to Kansas City from Oklahoma in 1983. He practices primarily North of the river and admits patients to North Kansas City Hospital. He is a general obstetrician/gynecologist with many loyal patients who return with each pregnancy.
Howard Schwartz, MD
Dr. Schwartz exhibits great passion and respect as a provider of maternity care within the urban core. He is a devoted clinician and the most challenging and high risk obstetrical patients seek out his care. Though he often runs behind in office, he devotes a great deal of time to an individual patient consultation or to any colleague asking advice. He is a clinical teacher in the Research Family Practice Residency Program. He is married with two children and likes to surf E-bay and follow Cardinals baseball.
Gregory Starks, MD
Dr. Starks specializes in endocrine disorders and the diagnosis and treatment of infertility. The treatment includes in-vitro techniques and the latest advances in the field. He is a clinical professor for the area's teaching institutions and is a noted lecturer concerning the subjects of infertility and reproductive biology. He is a tennis player and enjoys home life with his wife and three grown sons.
Bradley Sullivan, MD
Dr. Sullivan serves as president of Midwest Women's Healthcare and has been in practice for more than 25 years. He is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and chairman of Research Medical Center's department of obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Sullivan is a member of the American Medical Association, the Missouri State Medical Society and a past president of the Kansas City Gynecology Society.
Our Staff
Kimberley J. Anderson, MSN, CNM
Kim has been providing maternal child services to the women of Missouri for over twenty years. She received her BSN in Nursing from Central Missouri State University in 1982 and a Master of Science in Nursing (specializing in midwifery) from the University of Missouri in 1999. She has practiced midwifery in a variety of environments, from rural Alaska to urban Kansas City. She is Vice-President of Chapter V-18 American College of Nurse-Midwives and active in maternal child issues in the greater metropolitan Kansas City area. Kim is a certified nurse midwife with Midwest Midwifery.
Mary A. Cowan, WHNP
Mary is a board-certified women’s health nurse practitioner. She received an undergraduate degree in both liberal arts and science at The University of Kansas and a master's from The University of Kansas Medical Center. Mary first practiced as a labor and delivery nurse prior to working as a nurse practitioner. She works in collaboration with Dr. Brad Sullivan and sees patients at our Belton and Prospect offices.
Maria Hapke, WHNP
Maria Hapke, WHNP, works in collaboration with Dr. Rebecca Johnson. Maria received a bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Kansas. She received a master of science in nursing from the University of Illinois at Chicago and completed the Women's Health Nurse Practitioner program. Maria is certified as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner through the National Certification Corporation, and is an active member of the National Association of Nurse Practitioner’s in Women's Health. She has more than 15 years of experience in women's health.
Katie Lorand, CNM
Katie Lorand, CNM, has been a nurse-midwife since 1997 and has practiced midwifery in several different types of settings in four different states. Having seen and experienced many different approaches to pregnancy and childbirth, she believes strongly in the ability of women and their families to make good choices about their childbearing options when given complete and accurate information, and she is committed to supporting women in their choices. She has a particular interest in working with underserved populations and in working with couples who desire natural childbirth options. Lorand completed her nursing training at Johns Hopkins University. She received her midwifery training at Boston University, where she also received a Master's degree in Public Health.
Sheila R. Roth, CNM
Sheila has been a Certified Nurse-Midwife since 1994 and celebrated her 1,000th birth in 2005. She received her midwfery training from San Jose University and has worked in the Missouri and Greater Metropolitan Kansas City area since that time. Wtih an emphasis on nutrition, Sheila encourages a holistic approach and informed decision making in one’s healthcare choices. She is a member of APPPAH and serves on the FIMR Board in the Kansas City area. Sheila is a certified nurse midwife with Midwest Midwifery.
