Our caring OB/GYN team understands infertility is a difficult health issue with its own emotional and physical challenges. We are committed to helping you work toward your goal of having a healthy, happy family. We are pleased to offer healthcare, encouragement and support for our patients as we accompany them through the process of trying to conceive.

Infertility causes and treatments

We consider infertility to have been determined when a woman has been trying to conceive for at least 12 months without success. In some cases, evaluation for infertility might be appropriate at six months. Once we verify infertility, we will conduct a medical evaluation to determine a cause and help formulate a treatment plan.

Causes of infertility

While there are many causes of infertility, for women the challenges are often related to ovulation or a condition affecting the uterus or fallopian tubes. For men, infertility is commonly due to an abnormal sperm count. National research suggests that approximately 15% of couples struggle with impaired fertility and in about 25% of those cases, infertility is caused by more than one medical factor.

Medical evaluation

If a couple is experiencing infertility, they will need to be evaluated by one of our doctors to identify the cause or causes. You will need to complete a full medical history at the time of the evaluation, including pelvic infections, abdominal surgeries, previous pregnancies and any other underlying health conditions or symptoms that might be contributing. Your doctor will also want to know about your menstrual cycles and associated pain and cramping.

Men will also need to provide a detailed medical history. The doctor will want to know if he has fathered any children, his occupation and the medications he is taking. Be prepared to discuss how often you are having sexual intercourse and how long you have been trying to conceive.

Testing and treatment

Your doctor may require some additional testing after the initial examination to help further understand why you are having trouble conceiving. These tests might include blood panels, semen analysis, ovulation kits, ultrasound and hysterosalpingogram (HSG or X-ray of tubes and ovaries). The doctor will work with you to determine the appropriate next steps to take.

There are several treatment options for infertility, including medication, insemination, injections and in vitro fertilization (IVF). We encourage each couple to consider their options and make a decision based on their circumstances.

Infertility awareness

We understand your struggle to conceive a child can be emotionally challenging and stressful. Many couples find it helpful to learn that infertility is a medical condition and not something they should feel guilty or ashamed about. We encourage couples who are having difficulty becoming pregnant to come to us for an evaluation and to explore treatment options.
